Law of Residence

Law of Residence
The Law of Residence (1 July 1993) considerably limited the rights of refugees and other foreign residents in Austria. Residence permits, good for six months, had to be completed in a country outside of Austria. Conditions under which marriage to an Austrian citizen conferred citizenship on a spouse of foreign origin were significantly tightened, as were the circumstances under which residency could be extended. The state of the Austrian labor market and housing opportunities are also considered in evaluating applications.
